Welcome to the 11th Annual Ocean State Homebrew Competition, proudly held in the mighty state of Rhode Island!

OSHC is an AHA/BJCP sanctioned event and will be following the 2021 BJCP Guidelines ( We accept all styles of beer, mead and cider produced by amateur (non-commercial) entrants. Please see the entry page for more details.

BENEFITS: This year's OSHC Entry Fee proceeds will benefit the RIDEA Scholarship (Rhode Island Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, & Action), whose mission is to promote a culture of equity, diversity, and inclusion in the RI beverage industry. ( In addition, all non-perishable food products collected during our After Party raffle will benefit the RI Community Food Bank (

JUDGING: Pre-judging will take place on Saturday, March 16th in the brewing lab at JWU in Providence, with one round of beer only, followed by dinner on us. The main Judging event will be Saturday, March 23rd, 2024 in the Barn at The Guild, in Pawtucket, RI and will include beer, mead, and cider. All volunteers are treated to breakfast, full lunch, and gourmet pizza at the Volunteer After Party (see below).
All judging sessions will be using Electronic Scoresheets to save time and reduce waste and unecessary printing. Judges are asked to bring a tablet or laptop. Paper forms will be available as a back up or for those who eschew technology.

Judging panels will be composed mainly of ranked BJCP judges and industry professionals, but we encourage new and aspiring judges to sign up, too! If you have any sensory training and/or are studying to become a judge, please indiciate your willingness and availability to judge when you register. New judges are always paired with more experienced ones, and it's a great way to learn and earn points prior to taking your exam.
Since no competition would run without all sorts of volunteers and stewards, please ask your homebrewing friends to join you for the day, and thank you so much in advance for your help!

AWARDS will be mailed out to all winners after the event. The list of winning entries and scoresheets will be available to all entrants that evening on the site. There is NO PUBLIC AWARDS CEREMONY in 2024. The Volunteer Thank-You party will be in the Tap Room at The Guild, which is open to the public. We will announce competition winners during a break in the live entertainment, but we are NOT live streaming the event.

WANT TO BECOME A BJCP JUDGE? This year, there will be a BJCP Beer Judging exam and a BJCP Mead Judging Exam held on Saturday, April 13th at JWU's Harborside Campus in Providence. Seats will be limited for both, and you must have passed the BJCP online entrance exam(s) within the previous calendar year to be eligible. For more info on the entrance exams and free study materials, visit the BJCP site. For more details, to reserve your spot, or to be added to the wait list, please contact

Best of Show

The Best-Of-Show judging will take place immediately following the second round of judging on Saturday. The highest-ranking judges without winning entries will compare all of the winning entries in every judged category to determine the winners.
There will be a 1st, 2nd and 3rd Place Best of Show award for Beers, 1st place Best of Show for Cider, and 1st place Best of Show for Mead.

The winning entries will be posted on this competition site immediately after the competition ends. There is no public awards ceremony. All award medals will be mailed out to winners in the weeks following the event.

First, Second, and Third Place Awards will be given in all judged categories, or as deemed appropriate by the judges.  All awards consist of high-quality custom OSHC gold, silver and bronze medals.

Awards are granted at the discretion of the judges, according to the standards and principles of the BJCP 2021 Guidelines.  Actual judged categories may be combined at the discretion of the competition directors, based upon the number of entries in any category, and for the purposes of judging similar styles across categories. Electronic and Scanned score sheets will be posted on the competition website for download during the week following the competition.

After the judging is complete, event volunteers are invited to stay for the OSHC After Party and Raffle from 5-8 pm. OSHC volunteers receive raffle tickets as part of their thank-you gifts and additional tickets for every non-perishable food item brought for the RI Community Food Bank. Volunteers may also purchase tickets on site.
Must be present to win raffle prizes. Prizes will include merchandise, gift certificates, and brewing equipment and supplies from regional and national sponsors. Check out our Facebook and Instagram for updates on new prizes and sponsors!
