Rules

Welcome to the 11th Annual Ocean State Homebrew Competition, proudly held in the mighty state of Rhode Island!

OSHC is an AHA/BJCP sanctioned event and will be following the 2021 BJCP Guidelines (https://www.bjcp.org/bjcp-style-guidelines/). We accept all styles of beer, mead and cider produced by amateur (non-commercial) entrants. Please see the entry page for more details.

BENEFITS: This year's OSHC Entry Fee proceeds will benefit the RIDEA Scholarship (Rhode Island Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, & Action), whose mission is to promote a culture of equity, diversity, and inclusion in the RI beverage industry. (https://www.rideacommittee.org/) In addition, all non-perishable food products collected during our After Party raffle will benefit the RI Community Food Bank (https://rifoodbank.org/)

JUDGING: Pre-judging will take place on Saturday, March 16th in the brewing lab at JWU in Providence, with one round of beer only, followed by dinner on us. The main Judging event will be Saturday, March 23rd, 2024 in the Barn at The Guild, in Pawtucket, RI and will include beer, mead, and cider. All volunteers are treated to breakfast, full lunch, and gourmet pizza at the Volunteer After Party (see below).
All judging sessions will be using Electronic Scoresheets to save time and reduce waste and unecessary printing. Judges are asked to bring a tablet or laptop. Paper forms will be available as a back up or for those who eschew technology.

Judging panels will be composed mainly of ranked BJCP judges and industry professionals, but we encourage new and aspiring judges to sign up, too! If you have any sensory training and/or are studying to become a judge, please indiciate your willingness and availability to judge when you register. New judges are always paired with more experienced ones, and it's a great way to learn and earn points prior to taking your exam.
Since no competition would run without all sorts of volunteers and stewards, please ask your homebrewing friends to join you for the day, and thank you so much in advance for your help!

AWARDS will be mailed out to all winners after the event. The list of winning entries and scoresheets will be available to all entrants that evening on the site. There is NO PUBLIC AWARDS CEREMONY in 2024. The Volunteer Thank-You party will be in the Tap Room at The Guild, which is open to the public. We will announce competition winners during a break in the live entertainment, but we are NOT live streaming the event.

WANT TO BECOME A BJCP JUDGE? This year, there will be a BJCP Beer Judging exam and a BJCP Mead Judging Exam held on Saturday, April 13th at JWU's Harborside Campus in Providence. Seats will be limited for both, and you must have passed the BJCP online entrance exam(s) within the previous calendar year to be eligible. For more info on the entrance exams and free study materials, visit the BJCP site. For more details, to reserve your spot, or to be added to the wait list, please contact jpereira@jwu.edu.

SUBMITTING ENTRIES: Registered entries can be submitted at shipping or drop-off locations after the new year. The list of available drop-off locations and shipping information can be found on the Entry Information page. Be sure to double-check the deadlines and hours for your preferred method and location. Shipped entries will arrive directly at the pre-judging location, where they will be held at cool room temperature until sorting day. There will also be a one-day drop-off event at the same location as listed on the 'Drop_Off Location' page.
To find the drop-off location closest to you, take a look at our Google Map

Entry fees are $10.00 per entry. Two (2) bottles are required for each entry, regardless of size. 12-oz. brown glass bottles are preferred, but cans and larger formats are allowed. Single-bottle entries will be judged, but are not eligible for the Best-of-Show judging. All fees must be pre-paid online through this website via PayPal before entry labels can be printed.

Please read all sections of the site prior to entering, as entry fees are non-refundable. Any inquiries can be directed to the Competition Organizer at jpereira@jwu.edu .

Cheers and Happy Brewing!
